Back to the running doc

My race calendar has been full for the past couple weeks, with the Silver Spring Earth Day 5K the weekend before last, the GW Parkway Classic Ten Miler on Sunday and the Broad Street Ten Miler in Philadelphia this coming weekend.

Amid the excitement, I’ve all but forgotten about taking care of my still-swollen ankle, which doesn’t hurt much but is freaky and troubling nonetheless. So I’m heading back to Dr. Daniel Pereles, the marathon-running sports orthopedist who’s made this whole process painless for me (pun kind of intended — sorry about that).

An open MRI a couple weeks ago confirmed that I do not currently have a stress fracture, only tendonitis. It showed that I DID have a stress fracture earlier this year that healed itself, but that doesn’t mean anything for my current treatment. I mention this only to let everyone know that I have magic bones capable of healing themselves at a superhuman pace, proving that 1. I’m tough, and 2. I’m some sort of freaky, slow-running superhero.

Two courses of anti-inflammatory steroids didn’t make the swelling in my ankle go away completely, so I’m prepared to get some cortisone shots when I go in tomorrow, per my discussions with Pereles at my last appointment. This is so totally fine with me. In fact, it makes me feel a little bit like a clutch football player who’s questionable for her next half-marathon who’s getting pre-game treatment in the lockerroom. I mean, I’ve already taken ‘roids, right?

Wish me luck at the doc tomorrow, and start sending me lucky thoughts about the 10-miler this weekend.
